Minutes from meetings of the board 1865

Date: 14th March 1865

Venue: 4 Old Palace Yard, Westminster.

Present: William Rusell, Raymond Barker, Mr Talbot, Michael Hicks-Beach, Taylor, Capt Farquhar, Mr Farquhar, Mr Akers, Mr Lidell, Mr Richards & Mr Newmarch.

Mr Farquhar explained the preparation of the contract, which has now been referred to counsel.

Correspondance received by Mr Newmarch from a Mr Dawbury over the purchase of land.

Hicks-Beach received a letter from the Rev Favrar asking to be released from his subscription of shares. The Board has no power to do such a thing.

Mr Barker received a letter asking for the garden iof Mr Woolaston not to be interfered with by the Company.

Draft contract for the execution of works approved. Copy to be sent to the West Midland Railway for approval. If all is well the Company seal is to be affixed to the contract.

Solicitors have had several meetings with the contractors. Contract referred to the Company Solicitors to sort out.

A call for £2.10.0 to be made per £10 share on the shareholders, to be paid by 9th May next.


Date: 5th May 1865

Present: William Russell, Mr Barker, Mr Talbot, Michael Hicks-Beach, Mr Farquhar & Mr Akers.

Solictors reported on a new bill entitled "London, Bucks and East Gloucestershire Railway".

The Solicitors reported an application by the Midland Railway to subscrie to £100,000 of East Gloucestshire Railway shares was thrown out by Parliament.

New agreement with the Midland railway:

Works contract finally revised by counsel - Signed, sealed and exchanged.

Companies solicitors to write a formal agreement with the Midland Railway (via their solicitors).

Meeting of shareholders called for the 14th of June for approval of a new bill now pending in Parliament: "East Gloucestershire & Wiltshire Railway Bill"

Present: William Russell, Mr Barker, Mr Talbot & Mr Akers.

No payment yet made to the contractors (who has spent £12,000). No more works unless a payment is made to him. £10,850 to be made. In future the Company will pay for the land directly, rather than the contractors first buying it, then charging this to the company.

Further call to shareholders, and solicotors to chase those in arrears with the previous call.

Petition from "Sandford-in-the-Bird" asking a for a station to be built at Clanfierld. Referred to Engineers for consideration.

Agreement with the Midland Railway:

Midland and EGR boards to meet to discuss the above agreement.

Solicitors to contruct a Bill entitles "East Gloucestershire Railway Deviation Bill, 1865" which will:

Letter to be written to the GWR asking if they want the broad gauge laid from Faringdon according to the Act.

Call of £2.10.0 per £10 share to be made.

Present: William Russell, Mr Barker, Mr Akers, Mr Talbot & Mr Taylor.

A meeting of the Board with the Midland's Board has occured.

EGR to build all lines as quickly as possible. Goods stations to be built at Cheltenham High Street.

EGR to make of ver workings of lines 2 & 3 to the Midland Railway.

Solicitors to prepare formal agreement with the Midland Railay for presentation to the board.

Mr Hythes wishes to give up the contract of works. Mr Liddell to ask what terms and to communicate with other responsible contractors.

Present: Mr Barker, Mr Akers, Mr Strickland & Mr Talbot.

Heads of agreement with the Midland railway submitted to the Midland Railway board.

Mr Wythes will give up the contract after all expenses have been paid. Solicitors and Engineer to negotiate.

Letter received from the GWR saying their board is unable to agree to drop the broad gauge rails. The EGR ar mistaken that the GWR will lay the narrow gauge to be laid from Didcot to Wootton Bassett. Therefore broad gauge will be required to be laid by the EGR as per the Bill.

Two threats to sue the company over debts. One request for payment for land received. All to be paid.
